The Salkan Carry-On 35L
In our previous blog post we covered our favourite checked luggage – check it our here. In this blog post we will cover our favourite hand luggage/day packs. We have recently been away in Iceland where we put our day packs to the test.
The Salkan Carry-On has been my companion for a number of weekend trips to the mainland and more recently a longer trip to Iceland.
The main feature of this bag is all of the hidden gems on the inside and outside of the rucksack. At first glance you will notice the material is not the standard nylon material in usual rucksacks. The material is in fact a fabric material with a DWR coating for a waterproof finish.
It is obvious that the rucksack has a dual opening (a large front opening and a top drawstring opening to make going in and out of the rucksack super easy. A really practical element of the rucksack are the daisy chain attachment loops, these loops are super easy to clip on a carabiner clip and the stretch cord is useful to hold additional items like shoes and caps.

Other features include the convenient Hood Pocket with a hidden zip under the flap, we found this really good for immediate valuables such as phone, keys and wallets and even a lens cloth for our cameras. The only downside to this pocket is it is the only hood pocket out of the collection that isn’t fleece lined.
The two external side pockets are great for water bottles but we also thought they were ideal for our tripod. The compression straps secured not only the bag in place but also the tripod and water bottle.
On the underside of the bag there is a velcro pouch with a removable waterproof cover great for those not so pleasant days or as we found when visiting a waterfall.
The stretch cord storage on the front of the bag is also super convenient to add a pair of shoes, jumpers and jackets, this is brilliant for those days out or even when on board on the plane.
Other features which are not as visible from reverse are a hidden laptop pocket which can be accessed from the side of the bag or internally, this is secured by a velcro flap on the inside and a zip externally. This is coupled with the smaller zip pocket for a passport or a lens cap when out shooting for the day.
Another really convenient feature are the removable hip straps, we found these very useful as they pockets are large enough some keys, passports and other smaller items as well as adding to the comfort of the bag. The hip straps are accompanied by a chest strap again securing the bag in a very comfortable position.

Internally the bag has five zip pockets useful for those smaller items, for us we used these for a torch and a notepad. Along with these pockets there are four loops useful to attach keys and air tags. The large main section is a great size, as we carry a lot of camera gear when we travel we put one of our camera cubes inside the bag in order to carry a spare lens, a drone including a controller and spare batteries, an Insta 360 and camera accessories. We still had room for our jackets on top of this due to the adjustable hood flap making a great small or large day pack.
The comfort of the bag is another highlight due to the adjustable padded straps. The straps also have a loops on them making it easy to attach carabiner clips. We attached our Peak Design Camera Clip making this bag an excellent choice for both adventures and travel.
All in all, I feel that The Carry-On 35L is a great day pack or a weekend travel pack. Having tried several other options this is best pack I have used to date.
